Moving Across the Country: The Benefits of Backloading

When I was offered a new job in Perth, I had to relocate my life from Brisbane. I had no idea how I was going to ship all my things across Australia. I considered hiring a van and doing it myself, but driving thousands of miles and then starting work when I arrived just didn't appeal to me. I looked into using a moving company, but I was put off a little by the cost. It was then my friend mentioned backloading. Backloading allowed me to haul my things across the country on trucks which were returning from another job. This drastically reduced the cost. I am now settled in Perth, but I wanted to start this blog to help others who need to store or move the things they own.

How to Make the Most out of Your Self Storage Unit

Self storage is the ideal way of storing the items that are rarely used in the home. Be it furniture, household appliances, kitchenware, clothes, books, or even vehicles and boats, a self storage unit can accommodate it all and help in decluttering your home. Once you have selected a storage unit in a convenient location, it is essential that you make the most out of the space that you have paid for. Here are some tips that will help you make the most out of your self storage unit.

Choose quality boxes

Most of the things that go into a storage unit will be packed in boxes. The type of boxes you use will determine how efficiently you utilize the unit. It is advisable that you use no more than two sizes of boxes so that stacking them will be easy and more organized as opposed to if you had boxes of various sizes.  Also, make sure that the boxes are made of a quality material such that the box at the bottom can withstand the weight of the boxes above them.

Plastic boxes are among the most durable, versatile, and sturdy boxes that you can use in your unit. Also, they come in various colors; therefore, you can go for clear boxes which allow you to identify the contents easily without having to open them.

Utilize the height

Making use of the height in storage units can help you fit as many things as possible inside a small unit. Stacking your items to take advantage of the height can leave adequate space for you to store as many things as possible and declutter your home. When stacking items, make sure that the heavier ones are located at the bottom and the lighter ones at the top so that nothing get crushed. You can stand couches and tables at the corners so that they don't occupy much floor space, and place light boxes on top of them.

Before stacking items over your furniture, place cardboard or blankets on top of them for protection so that they don't end up being damaged by heavy items.

Dismantle furniture

Some pieces of furniture such as bed frames can be disassembled for storage so that they don't occupy much space. If you have a sofa bed or folding chair, make sure that it is folded before storage. Deflate an inflatable bed or lounge chair before storing it so that it can occupy minimal space. Make a list of the items you have and think of ways you can store them without using up much space.

When using a storage unit, make sure that you leave a clear path that can allow you to move around the unit so that you don't end up making a mess when trying to retrieve items.
