Moving Across the Country: The Benefits of Backloading

When I was offered a new job in Perth, I had to relocate my life from Brisbane. I had no idea how I was going to ship all my things across Australia. I considered hiring a van and doing it myself, but driving thousands of miles and then starting work when I arrived just didn't appeal to me. I looked into using a moving company, but I was put off a little by the cost. It was then my friend mentioned backloading. Backloading allowed me to haul my things across the country on trucks which were returning from another job. This drastically reduced the cost. I am now settled in Perth, but I wanted to start this blog to help others who need to store or move the things they own.

How to Choose a Self Storage Unit

Are you looking for a storage unit? It could be you need to store your vehicle, sports bike, electronics, or furniture that you no longer use. Below is an excerpt discussing the considerations you should make when leasing a storage unit.

Type of Unit

Your needs will determine the type of storage unit you should rent. Below are the various types of storage units:

  • Mobile self-storage containers can be stored in your home or business premises. The storage company will deliver, pick up or move the container to another location at your request.
  • Storage sheds are a permanent storage solution for people that need storage space in their homes. The primary benefit of these sheds is that you can customise them to complement your home design. Besides, they can be built to any size.
  • Climate-controlled storage units are ideal for people who need to store wines, paintings, and furniture. They are a sure way to protect your items from humidity.
  • Outdoor self-storage units are provided by storage companies. Their primary benefit is that you can drive up to your storage unit at any time and store things like large furniture and cars.
  • Indoor storage units are smaller than outdoor units. They are perfect for people that need small units or lockers to keep documents and compact electronics.

Company Services

Contact a reputable self-storage company and ask if they have an available unit. Inquire about the company's services. For instance, some companies will ask their staff to help you arrange items in the unit. Others have removal trucks to move your items to and from the storage facility. Some storage companies will offer extra services such as long-term parking and co-working spaces to people that rent their storage units.

Terms of Hire

Read the fine print of the storage contract to understand the company's terms and conditions. For example, you would want to know the minimum hiring period if you need to use the unit for a short while. Most storage companies will prohibit you from storing dangerous chemicals and unlicensed firearms in your storage unit. Check the company's liability policy. For instance, will they compensate you if a thief breaks into your unit? If not, you will need to take a storage insurance cover.

Remember to examine the pricing. Beware of extra costs such as penalties for late repayments. In some cases, the company will auction your items to recover storage fees if you do not make payments for a stipulated period.
