Moving Across the Country: The Benefits of Backloading

When I was offered a new job in Perth, I had to relocate my life from Brisbane. I had no idea how I was going to ship all my things across Australia. I considered hiring a van and doing it myself, but driving thousands of miles and then starting work when I arrived just didn't appeal to me. I looked into using a moving company, but I was put off a little by the cost. It was then my friend mentioned backloading. Backloading allowed me to haul my things across the country on trucks which were returning from another job. This drastically reduced the cost. I am now settled in Perth, but I wanted to start this blog to help others who need to store or move the things they own.

Tips for Being Organised When Relocating Using Furniture Removalists

When relocating to a new home, it's essential to be organised when the furniture removalists arrive. Otherwise, you may end up wasting time and money by haphazardly throwing things into boxes and moving stuff you'd rather throw out. Here are some tips to ensure an organised approach.

Decluttering

Decluttering is not only helpful for peace of mind, it also saves money on packing materials and transportation costs. You can start a few weeks or days before the move and take a systematic approach, going through each room and creating groups of things to keep, donate and throw out. While this can be time-consuming, it will make moving day more efficient.

Systematic Packing

Once you've eliminated your unwanted stuff, you can start packing what you want to take to your new home. Use quality boxes that won't break open as they're being carried and plenty of bubble wrap and packing paper to make every box snug. This will stop things from moving during transport.

You can pack out-of-season clothes, ornaments, books and other non-necessities well before the move. Label each box with the room destination in your new home so the removalists can carry things to where they belong, making unpacking easier.

Put delicate and breakable items in a separate box with additional padding materials and label the box fragile so the removalist will know to be extra careful. Don't put heavy objects in the same box, as they could cause breakage if things jiggle during the truck ride.

Measuring Furniture and Narrow Areas

You can add to the predictability of moving day by measuring your furniture and potential trouble spots in your new home, such as stairways and doors. This will let you know beforehand whether you need to disassemble furniture pieces or if they will need to be moved through a window or another alternative.

If you measure the room proportions in your new place, you won't be faced with surprises with respect to what can fit. And the removalists won't waste time experimenting with setting a piece of furniture in various rooms.

Additional Services

Being in a new home with boxes everywhere can be overwhelming, so you might consider using the additional services offered by some removalist companies to help you get organised quickly. Some companies provide unpacking services and may be able to reassemble furniture. If you plan to use this extra help, make sure to book it beforehand so the additional time is factored in.
